About
Accademia Provinciale is a six-month artistic and pedagogical residency organized by Provinciale11 in collaboration with the Municipality of Mulazzo, Tuscany. The project connects artists under 36, curators, and educators from scientific, artistic, and philosophical fields to develop research practices rooted in the territory of Lunigiana.
The residency runs from August 2026 to January 2027 in two parallel locations, Mulazzo and Fivizzano, each hosting five participants (four artists and one curator), accompanied by a program of seminars, workshops, and symposia led by theorists and educators. The residency provides accommodation, access to shared studio facilities, and a fee of €500 per month. The program is divided into three modules:
Situating the School, dedicated to studying the context, as a moment of listening, immersion, and collective construction of critical tools to engage with the territory through research, case studies, and public activations;
The Garden, focused on practical experimentation and co-design of a collective garden as a space for care, ecology, and the intertwining of individual practices with the communal dimension;
Forms of Sharing, devoted to sharing outcomes through exhibition and editorial formats, conceived as devices for memory and transmission of the process.
The theme of soil lies at the center of the project, understood as a shared space, a record of place and repository of memory, and a means of relating to the territory. With a transdisciplinary and non-hierarchical approach, Accademia Provinciale fosters the creation of shared knowledge between theory and practice, with attention to social, political, and ecological dimensions.
The residency actively involves the local community through open studios, public meetings, and moments of dialogue. By the end of the residency, in addition to the artistic and curatorial outcomes, a publication will be produced to document the research process and the forms of participation developed.

How does one encounter a place that does not belong to them? When does one belong to a place, to a land, to a soil? How can artistic practices emerge in relation to an environment without reproducing extractive or instrumental forms of engagement?
The Municipality of Mulazzo, lead partner of the project, is pleased to announce the launch of Accademia Provinciale, a residency for artists and curators conceived as a non-formal learning programme and extended residency, structured in two parallel editions, taking place from August 2026 to January 2027.
In collaboration with the Unione di Comuni Montana della Lunigiana, Gal Sviluppo Lunigiana Scarl, and P11, the programme brings together researchers, lecturers in art and philosophy, artists, curators, and writers working in the fields of ecology and environmental thought. The researchers share their knowledge with the participants selected through this open call, through a series of curated lectures, seminars, practical workshops and symposia, mentoring sessions, and other activities.
The residency lasts six months and takes place in two parallel locations, Mulazzo and Fivizzano, each of which will host five participants: four artists and one curator per residency. Accademia Provinciale will offer participants a sustained period of study, collective research, and artistic production, fostering critical exchange, interdisciplinary dialogue, and site-specific practices in close relation to the surrounding landscape and local context.

Each module integrates non-formal theoretical training and practical learning together with collective and individual project development.
Module I — Situating the School
August 1 — September 30, 2026
How does one meet a territory that is not one’s own? When does one belong to a territory, to a ground, or a soil? How can artistic practices emerge in relation to an environment without reproducing extractive or instrumental modes of engagement?
Module l will prepare a soil for learning and cultivating together: A school will be built by its own students. Situated in the territory of Lunigiana, it will reach far out to- and through grounds, times and places.
Module II — The Garden
October 1 — November 30, 2026
‘A territory exists only insofar as it is marked,’ argues Deleuze and Guattari, reminding us that movement is inseparable from its trace. In module ll we question how artistic practices can gather to take shape as a new layer of the palimpsestial tissue of the land, by making a garden in direct dialogue with the soil and its surrounding environments.
Module III — Forms of Sharing
December 1, 2026 — January 31, 2027
The third module focuses on the possible processes of production, including the creation of artworks, curatorial development, installation, and the realisation of the final collective exhibition presenting the potential outcomes of the residencies. The process and possible exhibition will be followed and composed by the curator in residence in close dialogue with the artists and the visiting teachers.

Provinciale11 is a collective dedicated to constructing decentralized cultural systems working across various practices connected to writing, curating and the making of visual art. With its nine members coming from Italy, Albania, Cyprus and Denmark, the collective explores how to research in contexts foreign to one’s own, individually and together.
Through residencies, public readings, symposia, and exhibitions, in Lunigiana and elsewhere, the collective bases its activities on listening, commonly in dialogue with thinkers and practitioners contributing with perspectives from other fields such as philosophy, science, theology, and anthropology.
Each project of P11 contributes to mapping a growing body of embodied knowledge, resulting from the interaction between a territory and artists invited to inhabit it for short or long periods.
